THE BALLAD OF ION LUPESCU
or 222 Minutes to Live
Synopsis
Ion Lupescu, the Romanian track star and national hero, defected from his homeland to try his luck in the New World. A detective, an athlete himself and an ex-member of the Securitate forces, has been sent to Southern California on a mission to find Lupescu and bring him home safely to Bucharest.
The detective progressively makes ground on his prey by decoding a series of increasingly mysterious phone messages. And while the two protagonists are being drawn into a high stake game that is quickly turning into a matter of life and death, they are also sliding into becoming one and the same.
All along and possibly unbeknownst to him, the detective delineates the contours of discrete geometrical shapes upon the vast wonderland of suburbia. Who - or what - is the force behind the drawing of this ideal "spatio-temporal" zone locked between the static images of the Ceausescu regime on the one hand and the American TV apocalypse on the other?
